Young? Active? Under 60? Check Out the Birmingham.

Unlike traditional total hip replacement, hip resurfacing with the Birmingham preserves the femoral head and neck (top of thigh bone) and uses a much smaller implant, which means less bone is removed. It’s a conservative surgical approach, intended for young, active adults who are under 60 years of age and in need of hip replacement.

The Nanoknee™ Experience: Better Outcomes. Faster Return.

Unprecedented results. The fastest recovery possible. That’s what you get with Nano hip surgery – that you can’t get anywhere else. With this approach, our patients:

  • Are walking and using their hip joint 60 minutes after surgery
  • Can return home and begin healing just two hours after surgery
  • Can resume their favorite sports and activities – pain-free

If you want the most convenient, most successful hip surgery available – with next level outcomes – you can count on Nanoknee™ to deliver.

The Advantages of Hip Resurfacing

  • Easier revision: The femoral neck and femoral canal are preserved during this procedure, which means a total hip replacement is easily performed if it’s needed in the future.
  • Smaller implant: The hip resurfacing device is smaller than a total hip implant. This helps patients get moving more quickly with a faster rehabilitation program.
  • More stability: The bone around the implant remains healthy and strong. This provides greater stability for the hip joint and reduces the chance of dislocation.
  • Shorter recovery: At the Nanoknee™, we have most of our patients walking around mere hours after surgery.

What to Expect During Surgery

Patients of all our Nanoknee™ locations have access to the Birmingham hip resurfacing procedure. Through an incision over the thigh bone, your surgeon will displace the femoral head from the socket. The damaged areas will be trimmed away with precision, preserving as much healthy bone as possible.

You will then be fitted with a metal cap. Inside the socket, any damaged bone and cartilage will be removed, and a metal cup will be fixed to the area. To complete the procedure, we will position the femoral head inside the socket and close the incision.

3 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Surgeon

Choosing a surgeon for joint surgery is no easy task. Hip resurfacing is a complicated procedure and should only be performed by an experienced, well-regarded joint replacement specialist. Dr. Ferro is the only surgeon on the central coast (and one of the few surgeons in the country) trained in hip resurfacing techniques. The most important factor influencing the outcome of your procedure is your surgeon’s experience and skill level. As such, you’ll want to ask:

  • How much experience do you have with Birmingham hip resurfacing? How many times do you perform this procedure per year?
  • What are your success and complication rates for this procedure?
  • What are the risks?

Are You a Candidate?

The best candidates for Birmingham hip resurfacing are young men who are active and have strong, healthy bones. Most patients are under 60 – although in some cases, older patients may qualify as well. In general, women do not have resurfacing procedures. When they require surgery on the hip joint, they typically undergo a total replacement.
